Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet takes Scottish Car of the Year honour

The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet, which went on sale in the UK just last month, has claimed its first accolade, being crowned Open-top Car of the Year at the Scottish Car of the Year awards.  The award was presented at a ceremony held in Glasgow on Friday 14 October.

In presenting the prize, the judges from the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers commented: ‘Scots love to make the most of the sunshine as quickly and as easily as possible, so our winner has to have a fast moving roof.  It also needs to keep the weather at bay on those rare occasions when the sun doesn’t shine in Scotland.

‘An entertaining drive is a must, as are pocket-friendly running costs.  Our drop top of the year delivers all of this and even lets you take more than just one friend along for the fun.’

The Golf Cabriolet, which is back after a nine year absence, was first shown earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and is a two-door, four-seater convertible.  It is fitted as standard with an electrically-powered fabric roof which can be lowered in just 9.5 seconds including on the move at speeds up to around 18 mph.

Customer have a choice of three engines: two petrol – a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS and 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS – plus one diesel which is a 1.6-litre common rail TDI unit with 105 PS and BlueMotion Technology modifications to ensure high economy (64.2 mpg combined) and low carbon dioxide emissions (117 g/km).  Prices start at just £20,720 RRP OTR.

With total sales of around 1.42 million units, Volkswagen is one of the world’s most successful producers of convertibles.  Between 1979 and 2002, 684,000 Golf Cabriolets were sold.

Volkswagen’s revised Tiguan compact SUV has gone on sale with prices starting from £21,085 and rising to £28,020 (RRP OTR).  Customers will be able to order a new Tiguan, with the first customer deliveries arriving in the UK in September.

Like the previous model, the latest Tiguan is unique in being available not only with a choice of two- or four-wheel drive, but also with the option of two front ends.  One has a front end biased towards on-road driving with an 18 degree angle of approach while an ‘Escape’ model has a 28 degree angle of approach and additional technologies for off-road driving.

Whichever version is chosen, all new Tiguans feature a new look dominated by horizontal lines on the front grille, bringing the model into line with other new Volkswagen models.  The Tiguan now also once again bears a strong resemblance to its ‘big brother’ the Touareg.  At the rear, new two-part light clusters give the Tiguan a distinctive appearance.  Again, similar to those of the Touareg, they form an ‘L’ shape, while the lower border of the lights also follows a horizontal geometry.

Four trim levels available: S, SE, Sport and Escape.  All models will be well equipped, with 16-inch alloy wheels, Climatic air conditioning, DAB radio and alarm standard on even the entry-level S.  SE adds 17-inch alloys, 2Zone electronic air conditioning, Park Assist, iPod and Bluetooth preparation plus Fatigue Detection system (as fitted to the new Passat) as standard.  Sport versions gain multi-function steering wheel and Bluetooth connectivity, plus chrome plated roof rails, heat insulated and tinted glass from the B-pillar back, sport seats, front fog lights and sports suspension among other items.  The new Escape model features comfort and convenience features (including Bluetooth and multi-function steering wheel) which were not previously available, reflecting a change in customer demands for off-road capability and a high level of equipment.

Six engines are available, three petrol and three diesel, four of which are new to the Tiguan.  New engines include a twin-charged 1.4-litre TSI with 160 PS (up from 150 in previous generation), a 2.0-litre TSI with 180 PS and a 2.0-litre TSI with 210 PS (previously 200 PS).  Despite the increase in power CO2 emissions have remained as before or improved.

A 2.0-litre TDI 110 PS engine is offered in two-wheel drive and with a CO2 output of 139 g/km.  A further two diesel power units are carried over from the previous generation (the 2.0-litre common rail TDI with 140 and 170 PS).  All have improved carbon dioxide emissions values: the 170 PS engine now emits 158 rather than 165 g/km; while the 140 PS unit has been improved substantially meaning it is now in a lower VED band (reduction from 164 to 150 g/km manual and 169 to 158 g/km for seven-speed DSG).  Diesel engines will account for around 90 per cent of Tiguan sales; the best-selling derivative is expected to be the 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS.

Both the 2.0-litre TDI 110 and 140 PS models, as well as the 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS with two-wheel drive are designated BlueMotion Technology models.  As such they feature Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems to enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions.

A number of options are available for the first time on the latest Tiguan, including Kessy (Keyless Entry and Start System), the RNS 315 satellite navigation system, Lane Assist (which helps prevent accidents caused by the driver drifting out of the lane) and Light Assist which switches between dipped and main beam depending on oncoming traffic.

Also available as an option is XDS electronic differential lock – as fitted to the Golf GTI.
A functional extension of the electronic locks already integrated via ESP, XDS improves handling when driving quickly through bends.

Naturally the latest Tiguan retains all the versatility and practicality for which the previous model was renowned, being a four-door, five-seater.  The rear seat (from SE upwards) is a 60:40 split bench that can be adjusted forwards and backwards by up to 16 cm and also reclined, while cargo capacity ranges from 470 to 1,510 litres.

The first images of the new Tiguan were revealed in February, ahead of the car making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.  The Tiguan is Volkswagen’s fourth best-selling model (after Golf, Polo and Passat), and in the four years since launch nearly 600,000 have been sold worldwide.

The 2012 Arrival of Volkswagen Passat 2.5 SEL

This, the Volkswagen Passat 2.5 SEL was released with great fanfare. It was also named motor trend's car of the year.

It has a performance testing value of 0.60mph at 9.0 seconds, making this is a great value that makes the acceleration process of this car graded above every other Passat model.

The back seat is spacious. The basic pricing for the Volkswagen Passat is not as expensive as you would think. It's affordable with several features that will boast its road performance when tested.

Further, the front engine has a five pass, four down sedan. The wheel floor unit gets up to 110.4 with a braking of 130ft.

For more than 30 years, the ‘GTI Meeting at Wörthersee’ has been a holiday in the calendar of fans of sporty Volkswagen vehicles. An event that will also this year see fans from right across Europe coming to the largest GTI meeting in the world in Austria. At this show of the superlatives, besides the Golf GTI Cabriolet, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Motorsport will be presenting the Polo R-WRC, the Polo WRC Street special edition model plus two further Golf GTI concept cars.

Golf GTI Cabriolet: Following its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show, GTI fans visiting the legendary Wörthersee event will have the chance to experience close up the dynamic advantages and sophisticated equipment features of this sports car from Wolfsburg. The key component of this highly dynamic soft top Golf is the 2.0-litre engine with 210 PS fitted for the first time in the Cabriolet. It is available with two engine/gearbox versions: as a manual gearbox or with the fast-changing dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), each with 6 speeds. A standard feature for all customers who get to indulge in the sporty driving performance of the Golf GTI Cabriolet is the XDS electronic differential lock on the front axle, which ensures perfect traction, enhanced agility and the utmost driving stability. To complete the picture, this hot hatch is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels of the type ‘Denver’ (18-inch wheels of the type ‘Detroit’ are optionally available) in addition to a new diffuser with chrome tailpipes.

Polo WRC Street: From motor racing to the street is the motto of the Polo WRC Street concept car. At Wörthersee, Volkswagen will be presenting for the first time a preview of an extremely sporty small series, which is due to be launched in late 2013. With its highly unique and distinctive design, this model cuts an impressive figure with its rear spoiler, diffuser, sports suspension and an inscription with R-WRC logos. A powerful 220 PS 2.0-litre TSI engine produces motorsport-like performance.

Polo R-WRC: With the newly developed Polo R WRC, Volkswagen Motorsport is presenting a road-going prototype for the FIA World Rally Championship. The “hottest Polo ever” – as it was called by Volkswagen Head of Development Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg even at its first official airing – will be starting its tour around the globe from 2013 at numerous WRC races. At the heart of this racing version beats a 1.6-litre TSI engine with approx. 300 PS power output, which ensures impressive acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds.

GTI Black Dynamic: Black as the night, with a red/black colour concept and lowered sports suspension, the ‘GTI Black Dynamic’ will be making an appearance at Wörthersee. Since October last year, nine Volkswagen apprentices – four young women and five young men – have been working on their ‘Apprentice Golf GTI 2012’. Their objective: vehicle concept design, styling, engine version and numerous details are meant to convey their interpretation of a classic sports car. Elegant and simple but with numerous stylish details, the ‘Black Dynamic’ is a real headturner.  It also features a 1,800 Watt sound system with nine loudspeakers, which takes up the entire boot space. This year’s ‘Golf GTI Black Dynamic’ is the fifth vehicle project to make its debut amongst the petrol heads in Austria.

Golf GTI ‘White Concept’: The attractive design study Golf GTI ‘White Concept’ is characterised by its remarkable ‘Oryx White matt’ paintwork. The vehicle interior affords an exciting black/red contrast. In addition to the sports seats in Nappa leather, red contrasting stitching adorns numerous details such as the steering wheel, handbrake lever and door armrests. A door sill trim – with the GTI logo and honeycomb pattern in White Matt and Aluminium – go to complete the unique appearance of the Golf GTI ‘Concept White’.
