At the beginning of next year, the icon of the sporty compact class – the Golf GTI – is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Volkswagen will mark this historic event with a progressive special edition: the new Golf GTI Clubsport. Now Volkswagen is presenting the production version of the new Golf GTI Clubsport at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt and offers a first look ahead at the driving performance of the most powerful production GTI ever.

The inventor of the “GTI” is thus continuing the tradition of GTI anniversary models, as exclusive special editions also marked the 20th, 25th, 30th and 35th birthdays. The turbocharged direct-injection engine in the anniversary model delivers an output of 195 kW / 265 PS , 35 PS more than on the previous mostpowerful Golf GTI. That, however, is far from all. For a short time – approximately 10 seconds each time – the driver can increase engine power by an additional 10 per cent to over 290 PS using a boost function. This added power is activated simply by kicking down the accelerator.

The Golf GTI Clubsport sprints to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds with a 6-speed manual gearbox; the optional 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) is even faster at 5.9 seconds. The Golf GTI Clubsport has a top speed of 250 km/h (DSG: 249 km/h). A look at fuel economy shows just how efficiently the sports car converts engine power into propulsion. With a manual gearbox, consumption is 6.9 l/100 km (equivalent to 160 g/km CO2); if power is transferred to the front wheels by DSG, the figure comes in at 6.7 l/100 km (155 g/km CO2).

Not only has Volkswagen given the anniversary model's engine more power, it has also extensively revised the design, equipment and aerodynamic fine-tuning of the anniversary model. Due to the high power output and significantly improved downforce, the dynamic performance of the Golf GTI Clubsport propels it into the domain of top-class motorsport. This results in ground breaking handling properties at high speeds and breath taking cornering speeds.

The Golf GTI Clubsport is painted in “Oryx White” (other colours are available); as a contrast, the roof area comes in black. The Volkswagen exterior designers created a completely new front bumper, new side sills, a new rear diffuser, a new multi-part roof spoiler and exclusive forged alloy wheels for the anniversary model. These features immediately make the anniversary model standout from the familiar GTI models.

In terms of style, the side profile of the Golf GTI Clubsport is based on the original GTI version. To put this in context: the first generation was characterised by a wide black trim stripe on the side between the front and rear wheel arches at bumper level. This stripe has now been transferred to the side area ofthe anniversary model, paying homage to the 1976 Golf GTI, and is enhanced with the lettering “Clubsport”. The black trim stripe is continued towards the front in the new air deflector element of the front bumper. The optional “Bresica” 19-inch alloy wheels designed especially for the new Golf GTI Clubsport make a further dynamic statement. The anniversary model is equipped asstandard with forged 18-inch alloy wheels that are also newly designed. A fine detail on the side are the high-gloss black door mirror caps.

There designed roof edge spoiler, perfected in the wind tunnel, is much larger than its counter part on the current GTI. There is a narrow air gap between the roof area that is entirely in black and the wing-like spoiler placed above it. The roof spoiler in high-gloss black and “Oryx White” projects upwards above the roof line. The lower rear section has also been individualised. Seen diagonally from behind, it is noticeable that the line of the wrap-around splitter of the side line (below the sill) is continued in the large rear diffuser that is a new development. Here, too, the colour is high-glass black. The redesigned and chrome-plated tailpipes of the twin-pipe exhaust system have been elegantly integrated in the diffuser; the diameter of the tailpipes is much larger than on the familiar Golf GTI models. The LED rear lights come in dark black-red.

The interior features iconic details that are essential forevery GTI; they include the ergonomic sports seats with a tailor-made look featuring tartan fabric upholstery, red topstitching, a gear knob in golf ball design and a black headliner. These insignia of sportiness have been individualised or modified for the Golf GTI Clubsport. Accordingly, the anniversary model features folding racing bucket seats instead of sport seats. The seats are partially covered with Alcantara andfeature a honeycombpattern in the area of the back rests and seat cushions; the backrest also incorporates “GTI” lettering. A red line enhances the seat belts. New trim strips in “Honeycomb 40” design (instrument strip, centre console and doors) give the interior an even more exclusive appearance. Sporty decorative features include Alcantara trim on the gear lever, new lenses on the gear knob, the Alcantara sport steering wheel (with GTI emblem, red seam and 12 o'clock marking) and customised floor mats with red edging. When the driver and front passenger open the doors, they see the exclusive stainless steel door sill plates with red GTI lettering.

The Golf Cabriolet is one of the most successful open-top cars on the German market and one of the most popular of its kind in Europe. At the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA), Volkswagen is presenting a visually extensive update of the four-seater soft-top best seller.

The changes are easy to identify by the considerably sportier front bumper, the striking side sills and sporty accents on the rear bumper. Moreover, the convertible can now be configured even more individually. Besides six new exterior colours, there is an additional soft-top colour and six new wheel designs. In the interior, there is a new generation of steering wheels and new trim elements as well as new designs for the cloth and leather seats.

The range of engines in the Golf Cabriolet was also uprated to model year 2016 and switched to the Euro 6 emissions standard. The four petrol (TSI) and two diesel engines (TDI) in total are direct-injection turbo engines with powerful torques to match.

Also new on board are the Composition Colour and Composition Media radio/infotainment systems. As a supplement to the Composition Media, the Discover Media navigation system is available. With the new infotainment systems, Volkswagen has brought Car-Net, featuring Guide & Inform, and App Connect smartphone integration to the Golf Cabriolet. Guide & Inform allows the use of Internet-based information channels, which include Online Traffic Information, News, the Vehicle Status Report and Weather. In addition, car drivers can discover restaurants, museums or cinemas in unknown surroundings or access information on free parking spaces in car parks and integrate them in the navigation system's route guidance.

The Phaeton, launched in summer 2003, was Volkswagen’s first large luxury saloon sitting alongside the Touareg as part of the brand’s representation in the luxury class. The hand-crafted, elegant saloon was available in short wheel base and long wheel base variants, and featured all the little extra special touches you might expect from a luxury executive car.

The Phaeton was designed from conception to set benchmark standards in its class, and to this end, sophisticated technology is a major facet of the vehicle. It was engineered to the highest standards, surpassing its key competitors in several areas when it launched.

Orders for the Phaeton have now closed and new Phaeton is being developed for launch in 2017, although introduction to the UK market is not yet confirmed.

  • Golf GTE wins Green category in the 2015 BusinessCar Fleet Technology awards
  • Judges praised the Golf GTE for its performance, ease of use and economy
  • Golf GTE launched earlier this year with plug-in hybrid technology - priced from £33,755
  • 204 PS performance combined with CO2 emissions of just 39 g/km

Volkswagen has added to its growing list of 2015 automotive industry accolades by winning the Green category in the annual BusinessCar Fleet Technology Awards - the Techies. The prestigious title was awarded to Volkswagen for the Golf GTE, an innovative plug-in hybrid that combines sporty dynamics with exceptional fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.

Now in their seventh year, the Techies are judged by both BusinessCar’s experienced editorial panel with help from TRL’s technology expert. The industry’s only technology-specific awards, the BusinessCar Techies reward the use of technology to make business car fleet operations easier, cheaper, cleaner, safer and more straightforward.

The judging panel selected the Golf GTE ahead of strong and established rivals on the Green shortlist, citing its exceptional performance, value and ease of use.

BusinessCar Editor and judge Paul Barker said: “Volkswagen has taken a huge step towards normalising ultra-low emission vehicles with the introduction of the GTE, a Golf that sits alongside its siblings in practicality, price and performance terms.

“It’s a sensible purchase that stacks up on running costs as well as environmental responsibility while proving that electric vehicles can be fun, entertaining, high quality and attractive.”

Launched in the UK earlier this year, the Golf GTE is priced from £33,755 and combines a 1.4-litre TSI engine with an electric motor. Along with three hybrid driving modes and ‘GTE’ mode, it also offers the all-electric ‘E-mode’ that provides silent, emission-free operation up to a distance of 31 miles.

Equipped with a six-speed DSG transmission as standard the combined power output of the Golf GTE’s electric motor and the TSI engine is 204 PS, while CO2 emissions are just 39 g/km.

Commenting on the award, Volkswagen’s Head of Fleet, Michael O’Shea added: “The Golf GTE represents a significant milestone in Volkswagen technology and I’m delighted that this has been recognised with this award. We know that buyers want to combine exceptional economy and emissions with the performance and proven quality that Volkswagen delivers – the Golf GTE proves that you really can have the best of both worlds.”

An endurance test lies ahead of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup competitors and their cars next weekend (22/23 August) at Snetterton, with two extended races to enliven the already heated action as the championship nears its conclusion.

Both Snetterton races will be of 30-minute duration, 50 per cent longer than the norm, which could prove crucial for drivers who are kinder to their tyres and those running less success ballast. Four drivers will go into qualifying and the first race carrying the maximum success ballast of 60kg following recent good results – Lucas Orrock, Michael Epps, Phil House and Aaron Mason.

House, a winner at Snetterton for PH Motorsport in 2013 and a podium finisher last time out, says careful preparation will be needed to make the permitted allocation of six new Hankook racing slicks lasts through qualifying and the longer races. “We are going to have to think carefully about how many laps to do in qualifying and how hard to go in the first few laps of the races to make sure not to cook the tyres too early,” says Phil. “It will also mean some set-up changes to make the tyres last a bit longer. It’s not going to be a case of backing off – you never really back off – but we will have to be a bit more calculating with our approach.”

The SlideSports Scirocco of championship leader David Sutton will be ballast-free going into the Snetterton meeting following a recent downtown in form. The Rotherham racer has led the championship all season, racking up four wins from the first eight races. His closest points rival, Doncaster driver Mason, regained his form last time out, at Brands Hatch, where he and his AWM Scirocco picked up their first win of 2015. Another gaining ground as the season approaches its climax is Cambridgeshire-based Orrock, whose Vindis-backed KPM Scirocco has finished on the podium at every meeting bar one this season.

Reigning champion Joe Fulbrook endured a Brands Hatch meeting to forget, suffering one of the biggest crashes of his 11-season VW Cup career. “It was a bit of a smash-up and it properly destroyed the car,” said Joe, whose Golf GTI left the track at Stirlings and rolled. “I was all right – it was only later that it started hurting a bit! It was a shame because we were going really well, and it wouldn’t have happened but for some incidents in the first race I got involved in, which put me ninth on the grid for race two and right in the thick of things. I’d been fast through that corner all weekend and it seems that I caught the car in front more quickly than I expected and I lifted off the throttle right at the moment I put a back wheel on the dirt. Within two-tenths of a second I was back fully on the throttle and heading straight for the barriers... It was the culmination of a catalogue of misfortunes and the punishment didn’t fit the crime.”

The Safe & Sound team technicians have been working overtime to ready Joe’s Golf GTI for a return at Snetterton, where he won in 2014. “The boys have been working monumentally hard on the car and it should be straight for Snetterton; hopefully we will be somewhere near the front. We had good pace at Brands and I want to get back out there because Snetterton has been a good circuit for me in the past.” Fulbrook does indeed have strong form at the Norfolk track, having won twice there in 2008, and twice since, including last year’s win.

The other race winners so far in 2015 are Team HARD’s Epps, who added the crash-shortened Brands Hatch finale to his tally earlier this month, Cooke and Mason Scirocco pilot Jack Walker-Tully and Wisbech-based Joe McMillan in the Cobra Engineering Scirocco.

There will be plenty of further contenders for victory on the grid in Norfolk, not least Team HARD’s podium finishers Howard Fuller and Bobby Thompson. It’s hoped that all the runners whose cars were damaged in the Round 12 startline shunt – including Laura Tillett (SlideSports), Damani Marcano (Team HARD) and Simon Tomlinson (AWM) will be back in action. In addition to rebuilding Fulbrook’s Golf, the Safe and Sound squad have been battling to restore Simon Andrews’ machine to full health after it was bashed at Brands.

Following the Snetterton double-header just two races remain on the calendar to decide the outcome of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup championship title, at Donington Park in mid-September.
