Volkswagen is upping the ante by launching a new, even sportier version of the ID.3 GTX. In addition to the ID.3 GTX03, which delivers 210 kW (285 PS), the new ID.3 GTX Performance with 240 kW (326 PS) is now also available to order. This means that the electric compact sports car is equipped with Volkswagen’s most powerful electric drive motor. Both GTX versions effortlessly convert their power into traction on the rear axle. The body and chassis layout offers significant benefits here: with the new 79 kWh battery (net) located in the sandwich floor and precisely in the centre of the vehicle, this design offers a sporty low centre of gravity and ideal axle load distribution for driving dynamics and vehicle handling that guarantees plenty of fun.

 

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development, says: “With its spontaneous and superior power delivery, the new ID.3 GTX Performance is for me the electric counterpart to our sporty compact car icon, the Golf GTI Clubsport04. Of course, an electric drive and a turbocharged petrol engine each have their own unique character. Yet the ID.3 GTX Performance and the Golf GTI Clubsport share the same fascinating lightness when they accelerate.”

 

Powerful engine, large battery and high charging capacity. The ID.3 GTX Performance is the first model to feature an enhanced version of the Volkswagen Performance drive system. Here the output could be increased from 210 kW (ID.3 GTX) to 240 kW (ID.3 GTX Performance). The electric drive motor produces a maximum torque of 545 Nm for both output ratings – thus exceeding the drive power of the most powerful Volkswagen V6 turbocharged engines. In the GTX Performance version, the ID.3 packs a powerful punch, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The drive is not electronically limited until 200 km/h – a first for the ID. family.

The energy comes from a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery (net), which absorbs up to 185 kW05 of power at DC quick-charging stations thanks to innovative charging and thermal management with battery pre-conditioning. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent again in about 26 minutes. The ID.3 GTX Performance’s WLTP range is up to 601 km06.

 

Sports DCC for the top-of-the-line version. The GTX-specific running gear is equipped with stronger stabilisers and is tuned to the drive system’s very high performance. The basic layout consists of a MacPherson front axle and a five-link rear axle with a sophisticated guidance system. The progressive steering system, which has been adapted to the ID.3 GTX, is fitted as standard. The ID.3 GTX Performance can also be equipped with the modified Sport DCC adaptive chassis control. The newly configured Vehicle Dynamics Manager uses more sensor signals than before. As a result, the system is able to better detect how the wheels and body are moving in order to control the shock absorbers accordingly by means of refined algorithms. This ensures precise handling and perfect roadholding – and not just in sporty driving situations.

Sporty GTX design. The ID.3 GTX and the new ID.3 GTX Performance differ from the other models in the product line with their special design elements. The GTX-specific front bumper features a new independent black air intake in a diamond-style design and customised signature light. The 20-inch Skagen GTX wheel rim is available completely in black as an option. A host of GTX-specific features also customise the vehicle interior.

 

Simple and intuitive operation. The new ID.3 GTX Performance comes with the latest generation of software and infotainment system with a 12.9-inch (32.8-centimetre) display, the IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT and an improved, intuitive operating concept. In addition, optional features such as the enhanced augmented reality head-up display, a redesigned Wellness app and the premium sound system from Harman Kardon are available.

Standard systems. The ID.3 GTX already has a wide range of state-of-the-art assist systems as standard to ensure comfort and safety on board. These include the cruise control system (can be extended to Adaptive Cruise Control ACC by an upgrade), Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist) with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, lane keeping system Lane Assist, oncoming vehicle braking when turning function and Dynamic Road Sign Display. Also included as standard: the Car2X traffic hazard alert function.

 

Systems such as Connected Travel Assist with online data utilisation are optionally available. This system enables assisted longitudinal and lateral guidance07 over the entire speed range as well as assisted lane changing07 on motorways. In addition, lane guidance without detected lane markings is possible if online data is available07.

It is almost time for the car lovers’ social event of the year in Wolfsburg: the GTI fan festival will take place around the Volkswagen Arena from 26 to 28 July. In addition to vehicle presentations, stage shows and club meets, there will also be numerous highlights and surprises for GTI and Volkswagen fans and their families inspired by the motto ‘Icons Coming Home’. A one-day ticket costs EUR 19.76, but a three-day VIP ticket is also available. For Friday afternoon, an additional Sundowner ticket will also be available for EUR 8.50 from 3:00 pm. Anticipation is half the pleasure. And when the international GTI family comes together, the pleasure is all the greater. “The three letters GTI are legendary in the automotive world. And the GTI Treffen event has also become a cult event over the decades. It is important to us that we offer the international GTI community a new home in Wolfsburg, the heart of our brand,” says Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand. “I am particularly pleased that we will be holding the first large GTI meet in a new format in Wolfsburg exactly 50 years after the first Golf left the assembly line in Wolfsburg. GTI community, Golf and Wolfsburg – the perfect fit!”

 

A party created for fans and by fans. For three days, the area around the Volkswagen Arena will be transformed into a GTI Fan City. More than 700 GTI and R owners will present their vehicles and their history. Prominent GTI fans, such as Volkswagen’s Head of Design Andreas Mindt, or motorsport legends Benny Leuchter, Strietzel Stuck and Jochi Kleint, will be on site and share their very personal GTI anecdotes with the community in expert talks. Sarah Elsser and car enthusiast and tuning expert Philipp Kaess will participate in Wolfsburg as a presenter duo. There is already a huge amount of anticipation as visitors from all over the world are expected.

Numerous model highlights from almost 50 years of GTI history. In September 1975, Volkswagen presented the first Golf GTI01 at the IAA – it was the beginning of a success story spanning decades. GTI models from all eight Golf generations, as well as GTI versions of the Lupo01, Polo02 and up!01, will therefore be on display at the fan festival around the VfL Wolfsburg stadium. In addition, Volkswagen will provide a glimpse into the brand’s all-electric future with the sporty GTX variants of the ID. models and the presentation of the ID. GTI Concept

Plenty for tuning enthusiasts to look forward to. Influencer Jean Pierre Kraemer (‘JP Performance’) will showcase his 'Thunder Bunny’ at the GTI fan festival. In addition, the event will feature special Volkswagen show cars, a selection of the most spectacular models from Volkswagen Motorsport, as well as trainee vehicles that Volkswagen trainees have modified over months of work. On Sunday afternoon, around 200 GTI and R models will put on a spectacular treat for the eyes and ears during a car parade across the plant site. There will also be a mobile performance test bench in the community car park for GTI and R drivers.

 

A host of highlights for the fans. When designing the event programme, particular emphasis was placed on taking into account the wishes of the fans and implementing ideas from the community. This includes, for example, sneaker customisation: a shoe designer from the community has developed special GTI designs for white sneakers. Visitors to the GTI Meet can buy these collector’s items at his stand. Alternatively, visitors can bring their own sneakers and have them given a finishing touch on site. Food trucks, the famous Volkswagen currywurst, as well as DJs and live music are also part of the GTI fan festival. On Saturday evening, singer-songwriter Michael Schulte will give a live concert in the Autostadt. Volkswagen Accessories & Lifestyle will also present numerous new products such as the new GTI Collection and a specially wrapped GTI Clubsport equipped with accessories, which has been specially designed for the event. One lifestyle highlight for fans is the GTI sneaker, which is available exclusively at the GTI fan festival: a limited-edition design with a GTI logo and red laces.

 

Special activities for kids. Numerous activities for children will also be offered over the entire event area. In addition to a kids trail, these include a bungee trampoline, the Sturmkind DR!FT racing simulator, the option to take a stadium tour, the GTI FanCup, wakeboarding on the Arenasee or a driving simulator at Volkswagen R. A number of stalls on the grounds will also offer hands-on activities and entertainment for little ones. In the Wölfli Ecke area, there will be lots of football-related activities for children, which will also be offered without accompanying staff.

Volkswagen has received the AutomotiveINNOVATIONS Award 2024 as the most innovative volume brand in the field of electric drives. The renowned award is presented annually by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM). In the opinion of CAM, Volkswagen scores highly thanks to its wide-ranging innovative performance in various technological aspects of electric mobility. The highlights include range improvements, as well as the optimisation of power consumption and charging capacity. In addition, the Volkswagen brand demonstrates its great innovative strength in the area of the electric ecosystem, which significantly increases charging convenience for customers. The ID.7 – the Volkswagen brand’s first electric vehicle in the upper mid-sized segment – was also rated positively.

CAM – Automotive mobility expertise. The Center of Automotive Management, under the leadership of Professor Stefan Bratzel, has been collating product innovations by global automotive companies and evaluating them according to quantitative and qualitative criteria since 2005. The winners of the AutomotiveINNOVATIONS Awards are decided on the basis of the annual AutomotiveINNOVATIONS Report, which is produced using the Center of Automotive Management’s innovation database.

For 2023/24, CAM analysed innovations from 30 global vehicle manufacturers and newcomers, covering around 100 automotive brands. A total of 709 individual OEM innovations available in series production in the technology fields of Electric Drive, Autonomous Driving & ADAS and Infotainment & Connectivity were evaluated. These include just under 200 – highly rated – world firsts. The scientific evaluation included criteria such as maturity level, originality, customer benefit and degree of innovation. In addition, around 300 additional pre-series innovations or concept vehicles indicate the future development trends of vehicle manufacturers.

As part of its ‘In China, for China’ strategy, the Volkswagen brand is focusing its product offering to more closely reflect the needs of its Chinese customers. Today, the car manufacturer presents the first model from a new Volkswagen sub-brand: the ID. UNYX. The E-SUV coupé of the same name is characterised by a particularly progressive design, a smart human-machine interface (HMI) with a personalisable 3D avatar and a range of more than 600 kilometres. The ID. UNYX01 is aimed at the Chinese market and is the latest development stage of intelligently networked vehicles from Volkswagen. The ID. UNYX is technically and visually tailored to the lifestyle of young customers in China’s metropolises. The ID. UNYX sub-brand’s retail concept will support this with 40 exclusive stores in 20 cities, where interested parties can experience the vehicle through modern technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

Four more ID. UNYX models by 2026: It is planned to expand the model range of the new Volkswagen sub-brand ID. UNYX by four more vehicles within the next three years alongside the newly unveiled E-SUV coupé. This will include SUVs as well as saloons. The ID. UNYX models are a central component of the Volkswagen master plan for China, which envisages the introduction of a total of 34 new models by 2030 and aims to strengthen Volkswagen’s position as the most successful international brand on the Chinese market. With the long-standing joint ventures SAIC Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen as well as the new Volkswagen Smart E-Mobility Hub, Volkswagen’s product range in China, including the ID. UNYX programme, will be expanded by 16 new electric ID. models, twelve new Volkswagen models with combustion engines and six new models with plug-in hybrid drive.

Adapted for China in the new Innovation Center: The ID. UNYX was created at Volkswagen's new innovation and development center in Hefei, eastern China. This location focuses exclusively on developing the latest generation of smart electric vehicles for the local market. The ID. UNYX is also manufactured in Hefei, at one of Volkswagen Group's most advanced electric vehicle plants.

3D avatar: The ID. UNYX’s innovative HMI includes an interactive, AI-based 3D avatar whose appearance can be individually adapted in an app and synchronised with the vehicle HMI. The avatar's voice can be configured based on a human voice and accompany the driver for conversations.

Long range: The entry-level version of the ID. UNYX is powered by a 210 kW (286 PS) electric drive motor on the rear axle. The motor is powered by a 77 kWh battery (net). The drive system can achieve ranges of up to 621 km (CLTC standard, China Light-Duty Test Cycle). There will also be an all-wheel-drive version with two electric drive motors and an output of 250 kW (340 PS).

Avant-garde design: The progressive design of the ID. UNYX is particularly powerful. Lifestyle elements such as the gold-coloured Volkswagen badge on the front and the golden vehicle lettering are distinctive features – the colour of these insignia is associated with the high quality, reliability and safety of a Volkswagen in China. Eye-catching elements at the front are the light signature of the LED matrix headlights including horizontal LED strip as well as a striking powerdome. The silhouette of the ID. UNYX is characterised by a sharply cut character line that rises towards the rear. The rear end in sporty coupé style features a 3D structure of the LED tail lights plus illuminated horizontal strip and Volkswagen lettering. The intricate LED elements create a floating light effect that is a perfect match for the progressive style of the body design.

01. The vehicle is not sold in Europe

The new Passat has been awarded the top rating of five stars in the renowned Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) consumer protection programme. This makes the vehicle one of the best-rated mid-sized models of 2024 in the independent European testing body’s overall ranking. After 2010 and 2014, the completely newly developed Passat also receives the highest award from Euro NCAP.

 

Now in its the ninth generation, the success story of Volkswagen’s best-selling Passat continues. The Passat, which is available exclusively as an estate model, impressed the experts at Euro NCAP with a host of important safety innovations. The safety assessment carried out by Euro NCAP, an independent European institute for consumer protection, covers four categories: the Passat achieved its best result in the Adult Occupant Protection category with a rating of 93 per cent. It also achieved very good results in the other three categories: Child Occupant Protection (87 per cent), Vulnerable Road Users (83 per cent) and Safety Assist (80 per cent).

Many assist systems fitted as standard. Even at the entry level, the Passat includes numerous assist systems at no extra cost. These include Side Assist (lane change system), Lane Assist (lane keeping system), ACC stop & go (Adaptive Cruise Control), oncoming vehicle braking when turning function, Park Distance Control (acoustic and visual warning signals if there are obstacles in the front or rear areas), Rear View (rear view camera system) and Dynamic Road Sign Display using the front camera, as well as LED headlights and tail light clusters.

Safety first, both inside and out. Particularly worth highlighting is Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitoring, which increases the level of protection for vulnerable road users in the event of an impending collision.

Within the system limits, the exit warning system can prevent an occupant from opening one of the doors when another road user (bicycle, motorcycle, etc.) is approaching from behind and additionally issues acoustic and visual warnings.

Another important technology in the Passat is Car2X, which allows the vehicle to exchange information about local hazards with other vehicles and the traffic infrastructure.

The Passat is both business class and an all-round family car. When it comes to occupant protection, great importance is attached to the safety of children. In both the frontal and side impact tests, the Passat was found to provide very good protection for all critical body areas of the two child dummies and was awarded the maximum score.

Since 2023, the Euro NCAP test criteria have become even stricter: the new requirements include, for example, the ability to detect any children left in the car – this criterion is also fulfilled by the new Passat generation.

Bestseller, especially as an estate. In its more than 50-year history, the Passat has been sold over 34 million times. In Europe, it is the estate version in particular that has been extremely popular over the years, and Volkswagen now offers the car only as an estate model.
And this enjoys great success: in Germany, the Passat Variant topped the rankings in the mid-sized class in 2023, with 45,494 new registrations.
